Now, I have just been reading back over some old posts there. The last time I was at this blog, I think this iPad hadn't even been invented. I am sure however, that grammar had been. Socrates, or whoever invented the apostrophe might balk at its uses and misuses in these posts.
Anyway, I have learned all about apostrophes in the intervening period, and hopefully any future posts might cause fewer grimaces.
I'm not correcting the old stuff.
Standby for more.

The latest Must have...
I was driving my kids to school this morning when
I saw a jeep with a designer chicken coop on the trailer.
It was like a fancy doghouse but had a little ramp running up to it, and a picture of a chicken on the front in case you still weren't sure.
I couldnt help but smile to myself as I imagined some cash-rich yuppy who was awaiting delivery of such a thing.
Her kiddies, she vowed, would only eat real eggs from real chickens from now on. No more of those eggs that they made in factories from nuclear waste and E-numbers.
And I remembered cleaning a chicken house for a neighbour as a young lad. I rememebered the filth. Hens are dirty little fuckers. They shit everywhere.
So why go through the pain of keepin Chickens/hens yourself when You can buy a dozen free-range hens eggs for about four quid from the supermarket. . I wonder how long it is before Ms Happy-Clappy is ordering a skip and a meat cleaver,
..and of course the power washer.

Idiot baiting
One wonders about the general fairness of the world. When poor dumb coutry folk decide to entertain themselves with a bit of badger baiting, stag stalking or even
hare hunting it is immediately banned. It is then down to some thin, silver-haired people with grey skin, who are rotting in some office somewhere in the capital, to dream up some severe punishments for any people who decide that its fun or entertaining to mete out cruelty to dumb animals.
Yet when ITV pay somebody millions of pounds to do it to human beings on a saturday night it is deemed OK, the putrescent pencil pushers stand by. Simon Cowel Bullies people who look like they have been bullied their whole lives, while the world watches. They come on and do their bit, be it british talent or The X factor that they claim to possess. Many people lack talent it would seem. Outstanding talent that people will pay to witness is rare, but folks who are willing to go on tv and make fools of themselves are plentiful.
The slimy, sneering Cowel goes into overdrive when the particularly deluded come on stage. He loves to belittle them, the irony of his own absent talent lost on everybody it seems. Instead of professionally and straight-forwardly telling these kids that they are deluded and talentless he turns it into a baiting session, sneering and making fun of them, like a small child pulling the legs from a Gnat.
He talks of one trick ponies but never alludes to his one and only trick. He does it every week with every comment. He points out the bad points of an act and, booooooo...
booooo...
We think he is going to vote someone off....
booooo...
He says he has saw it all before....
bbboooooooooo....
However...
you brought something new......blah...fucking blah
Yes we all thought you hated it. But you tricked us. How foolish we are to have fallen for it again considering you have about 5 different variations of this show on every year and you are a judge on all of them and you use that trick every time...
And everyone loves it. What can we call this sport I wonder? Where a vain sleaseball belittles people who would have been better off born a badger, or maybe a stag.
Well at least then they might have gotten some?

GrooveShark
This website is quite simply groovy.
You can find all sorts of music which you can stream live and listen to with out
having to pay.
OK, so maybe some of you dont pay for music nowadays anyway. But it might come in handy in the coming years when the record companies are breaking down your doors and dragging you off to break rocks in some hot desert dressed in pink jump-suits while hill-billies in khaki shirts and aviator shades ride round you on horseback with shot guns and little match sticks in the corner of their mouths....
Well I am told by my source that its legal anyway.
Enjoy it while it lasts...

A celebrity online encounter
I just spoke to the Jonas Brothers.
OK. So I need to explain.
Twenty Major told us about Chat Roulette. So I logged onto it for the laugh.
But I got nowhere. So I tried the other version, shuffle something or other. I got the usual stream of men pulling their willies and young ladies grimacing and clicking next.
But all of a sudden I got these three young lads who had no sound only text. ( but they could hear me) They asked me if I had heard of the Jonas Bros. I said I had.
I then pulled a picture of them from the net and realised it was them to whom I was speaking. Nice guys. It was mildly exciting.
So there you go, my celebrity experience....

Bring on the fear
You wake up suddenly and without warning. There has been no nice warm-up dreams about drinking bottles of gin that taste like chocolate milkshake or swimming comfortably and very warmly in a large pool of icy cool 7up.
The dreams of a normal hangover.
You are just awake.
The natural side effects of alcohol excess are evident. A feeling of your brain being shrinked violently inside your head, the burning in your chest from one after the other cigarettes. Dryness in your throat. Sometimes shaking. But always the fear. An immediate, illogical feeling of dread. It's like your brain knows something you don't, something terrible. A feeling like you are in great danger, or have done something awful. The fear. You immediately begin to counsel yourself, convince yourself there is no need for this fear. You begin to call up memories from the previous night and nothing bad springs to mind, yet still the feelings persist.
What is this sheer anxietey? Will anything cure it? More booze? Probably, but it's not an option as you have to function today, and you're not sure your body can ingest any substances at the moment. You just want to gag.
You tell yourself, it's the fear. It will pass. You try to convince yourself that you have no need for anxiety. But still it persists. You know there is no cure, you will just have to ride it out.
You are warm in your bed, and you curl up tighter in the sheets and flip your pillow over to the cold side and fight to sleep...
When it comes it is soothing. Each time you wake the fear is weakened. When you do get up and do what you have to do, this fear will come with you flashing in and out slowly.
Eventually it passes. You don't always get answers, sometimes there are no answers...
sometimes it just decides to stalk you...
Its all of course a trick. A trick by your body. It wants the booze again. It wants the warm and safe feeling again... so it tries to frighten you, with the fear..
tries to get you back there again...
And it usually works.
I have not had a drink for six weeks. (As a devout Catholic)
The fear at some stage over Easter weekend will be staggering...
I'm looking forward to it...
Might go to Limerick and do it on Good Friday...
Catch a Rubber bandits gig..
wooha..
Cant wait

back to CDs for me..
So what was so wrong with CDs? You could listen to them anywhere. In your car, out jogging, on a bus, in your home...anywhere. They were limitless.
OK, so now you can carry around the equivalent of 300 Cds in a box the size of a cigarette packet. You can have 298 CDs that you will never listen to, and the two that you bought this week. Hell, I can carry 2 CDs if need be. I only listen to CDs in my car and that has a boot that would definitley take 300 CDs if I wanted to always have 'Now 6' at my fingertips...
When you upgraded from an old version of windows to a newer version of windows, your CD's stayed the same. They still sat there in their little cases stacked neatly and tidily in racks. They didnt suddenly disappear. You didn't suddenly have to start searching through endless folders looking for music that you had actually bought legitimately. In fact you could throw your computer out the window, listen to it smash into a million pieces below, remove a cd from its cover and place it in your player and listen to your hearts content. You could also realize that the former action where initially satisfying may lead to some consternation at a later date.
I have made a concious decision today. No more of my money will itunes be getting.
The bastards. Download once and fuck off! Dont come back pestering us. We dont care if you gave us 9.99 for 'sigh no more' last week. You should have backed up!
I might start buying CDs again, though I think you can only get Susan Boyle now. But I supposed I could get used to her.
Then I suppose, I could start backing...

From Pixmania
Dear Mr Crea
Following your request to cancell your order, we register your cancellation but mean time it has been dispatched from our warehouse and given to DHL
This is what Pixmania had said to me. Now in fairness to them I had phoned to cancel the order a whole 10 minutes after I had placed it. Well, I hadnt phoned to cancel it, I had phoned to add to the order and the nice and helpful Indian sounding man on the other end told me the best thing to do would be to cancel my existing order and make a new order. Right I said, cancel it and I'll just re-order it plus the other item which I wanted.
But being the cynic that I am, and with my past experiences of helpful sounding people in distant lands on the ends of telephone lines... I waited. I did not place the new order, and this morning this email was waiting in my inbox. Well I am not going to post the whole email, the most important line which opened the email is posted above in italics.
So if you ever feel that what you have discussed with a representative of a company sounds great, but you have a feeling in your stomach that it wont work out and that if you do decide to go ahead and re-order your item plus the additional item then you will in fact end up with two of your original items because you are a bit cynical...
Well there is probably a reason for your cynicism, its called experience... They are all idiots and you are better just to get your order right the first time because they dont do anything complicated...
Think before you click!
I need to lie down..

Award ceremonies...
I heard during the week that James Cameron had a four million dollar Oscar war-chest.
Thats 4,000,000 dollars to wine, dine and sixty-nine a few thousand people who are members of the Academy. Thats what happens behind the scenes it seems. There is a lot of wining and dining, and where the sixty-nining may not necessarily come into it, a large amount of arse licking much kow-towing and general subservience...
It reminded me a bit of some other award ceremonies/competitions... its all a bit sick if you ask me...

to make a complaint about Susan boyle's hideousness press 7 now..
So are people complaining more nowadays because they are more conservative or is it just easier to complain, and therefore just developing into a lazy bunch of bitches?
When Jonaton Ross and the so-called comedian fellow made fun of Manuel on the phone, there were *3.5 million complaints to the BBC. Yet there were probably *no compaints when he was taking the piss out of spicks by playing an idiotic waiter in a comedy show *20 years ago.
But now you can zip off a badly-spelt email in a matter of minutes and have it sent in the time it takes to fire up i-tunes to buy the latest single that Simon Cowel has said you should buy..
I mean if you were to go looking for a pen and paper, and actually write it and then find an envelope... and then actually walk to the post office and buy a stamp and actually post it...
Well, no wonder they got away with all that racism and shit before the internet and email came
along..
*Figures may not be accurate, because I haven't researched them

Rant
Whats Pissing me off at the moment?
Bill cullen on the television with his band of brainless cretins...(but I have to watch)
the red 'X' seemingly burning itself onto my retinas all weekend long no matter what channel I flick to and no matter what time. I concede that its simple entertainment for simple people but why do the rest of us have to suffer so much of it? And I hope the mad twins with the hair win, because they are from Dublin, but I just hope its all over soon...
Bill Cullen on the radio, this morning talking about who should or should not strike. What business is it of his? He is a millionaire and isnt qualified to comment on what ordinary working people should be doing. (unless of course its buying shitty Renault cars)
People giving oxygen to that knacker from BallyFermot who is pissing on about apparitions of some Bird down in Mayo? Who gives a fuck? Don't be filling our column inches with such Garbage..
The God-damned rain, and the fucking darkness...
And the cold...
And as for that Ginger-minged eco-warrior David Mcwilliams I just wish that some hole would open up and swallow the fucking annoying, coin phrasing, know-all little prick.
Thats all for this morning, I need to refill my coffee pot..

Inglourious Basterds
I dont think I hated this film. But I'm not quite sure.
It is definitely way too long, and the reason for it is simple, Tarantino makes all of his scenes too long. There are some nice scenes in this film and some nice acting, but others let it down badly. Brad Pitt is hopeless, unconvincing and thoroughly un-menacing as the brutal Nazi-Killer.
There is one simple story line and it takes a ridiculously long time to come about. I am not sure what message he is trying to get across in this film, but in the end it is a muddle of cinematic history, ultra violence and little else.
The ultra violence is served up sparingly, after long bouts of tense(ish) build ups. In one scene we get to meet "The Bear" one of the Inglourious, and there is an unbearably long wait for the club wielding bastard to come in to view. The problem is, that its not tension or fear unbearable - its tedium unbearable.
The clever movie reviewers at the New York Times, will be able to tell you all the famous movie references and style references etc. etc. But for me I just want to be entertained, and was to some degree. But Tarantino fell down at the most crucial stage, that of The Story. The film is basically a collage of loosely related scenes that lead up to the story which comes to view after 2 hours of the movie have passed.
I'm sure that a lot of people will enjoy this film, but for me I like a film to make me think or to laugh or even to scare the life out of me. It did the latter a couple of times, and I found myself covering my eyes at some of the gory bits.
I think this is basically a comic book trying to be a movie. Its all meaningless dialogue pasted around lots of pretty pictures filled with action and 2 dimensional characters.
I know Tarantino fans think the man is God, so to them I say sorry, but I think I did hate this film.
Oh, and I did spot the Mike Meyers Cameo and was duly unimpressed with his flagging british accent. (public school educated british army types tend not to have scratchy accents that come in and out mike!)

Learn from the Rain Man Uncle Sam!
Gary McKinnon a man from the UK who suffers from Aspergers syndrome, a form of Autism, is to be extradited to the US for hacking the US military. It seems the man was something of a UFO nut and wanted to find out what the US knew about extra terrestrial life. He hacked a number of Top US military Navy and army sites, and now they want him, and they are going to punish him..
Fuck that. Surely they should be sending a private jet for the guy to come over and tell their so-called technology-security people what they are doing wrong and how they can avoid being infiltrated by genuinely threatening people. Fuck it, give the guy some Khaki pants, a lamenated ID card that he can wear at waist level and a leather laptop bag... make him head of US military something or other.. But dont punish the guy..
I'm not saying he is innocent, and the yanks are claiming he left their sytems open to other intruders, but surely they need to use this as a learning experience.
I say give this guy a break. Dont lock him up. Lock up the fuckers who built a vulnerable security system, or better still fire their asses. Hire this Rain man guy, and on the weekends he'll count cards for them in Vegas so they can get back the 700k he supposedly cost the US.
He highlighted a vulnerability, in my mind he may have saved them money or maybe more..
Give this guy a break...

Wiki-pedia (it even sounds Very Vicki Pollard)
Saying according to Wikipedia is a bit like saying
this bloke down the pub told me...
It might be 100% accurate, but then it might be a lot of rubbish.
So remember that when you say according to Wikipedia
we are only half listening. (especially the ones who have made some dubious wikipedia entries)

Its just meant to be fun you know...
OK, so I saw the New Terminator Film. And yes I took the Wee-Lad, and he loved it.
It is chock full of great special effects and some wonderful action scenes that distract you expertly from the lack of any real story line. But then when it is full of cool robots and flying machines and robot motorcycles, who needs to worry about questions concerning the space-time-continuum?
If you are going to start asking questions of a movie about its adherence to the laws of physics then you are probably better off avoiding most films that depend on special effects guys to entertain you.
Maybe you should see a nice serious film where all the players have been nominated by illustrious academies for their work. Christian Bale wont be one of them.
Its fun and a bit gritty, and you just shouldn't ask how highly advanced computer assassin robots take swiping blows at the central protagonist so to knock him over a bit instead of aiming a single deadly blow to begin with.
And you know before you go in that they cant possibly finish the story, I mean end a franchise? Is it mad you are?
(they cant go down the whole 'Prequel' route because that would just mess with our heads too much..)
Go on, suspend your disbelief. you may find you enjoy it.

Go on, suspend your disbelief. you may find you enjoy it.

a simplistic view of the Irish economy
Look, two years ago you were buying brand new cars that had about 5 to 10 grand worth of VRT lumped on top of them. If your not going to buy those cars anymore then they (the government) are going to have to get the aforementioned 5 to 10 grand from you some other way, namely via the good old income tax system. Its very simple; if you dont want to pay them the money the fun way, by buying stuff and donating tax that way, then they are going to have to take it directly from your pay packet. Its very, very simple. They need X amount of cash to run the country and we will give it to them the easy way or the hard way. It is that simple.
Now spend for gods sake and lets get ourselves out of this. We are not a master of industry type country. We buy stuff, and it gets taxed. We make stuff invented in other countries and benefit with the jobs and a minute slice of their tax take. If you can come up with a new way of running the country then it had better involve some new indigenous natural resource that we havent found yet to exploit. We are a nation of contractors. Its what we are good at, so lets get back to it and stop all this fucking whinging because nobody is going to pay us to whinge.

Crosaire revisited...
I love crosaire sometimes.
It can take me over an hour to get as far as I can.
Crosaire for the uninitiated is the cryptic crossword in the Irish Times
Crosaire
Sometimes I get loads done, and other days I just cant get started at all, but when you start to get the hang of it, it can be very satisfying.
It is not a five minutes and a cup of coffee job. It takes time. But now I have discovered some Irish guy living in San Fran who can help, and if your a bit of a Crosaire struggler like myself you might like to check him out..

whats ahead? Terminators!
I have taken to enjoying Film anticipation recently. I find it is more enjoyable anticipating a film than actually seeing it. In fact most films turn out to be shit. The only film I truly enjoyed recently(i'm talking couple of years), that was meant for me, was "No country for old men" and it didnt really stand up to re-viewing on DVD. "There will be blood" was goodish but too long and Day Lewis lost the plot in the closing scenes. "The dark Knight" was watchable but over hyped and in my opinion a very average film that strived to me more. And wasnt.
The movie I am anticipating this week is "Terminator Salvation". I am afraid to see it. I am a Terminator Fan, and can even grudgingly watch the third one, cause my son loves it. I have it built up in my head to be great for some reason and the trailers I have seen have me prepared for a great film. But the reviews are luke-warm and I am afraid to knock this "great" movie from its pedestal in my mind.
My son who is almost four thinks I am bringing him to see it, but his mother has said definitely
NO, and who am I to argue. Its just its advertised on every bus in Dublin and he spots every one.
do you know that tune, I am humming it right now...
de-de, de-de-de, de-de-de- de-de DE DE!
There may be trouble Ahead!
